House, M.D., or House for short, is a medical mystery that airs on FOX.
Upon its initial release, House, M.D. was considered by many to be just another medical drama—CSI with warm bodies, in a sense—and was dismissed by many as more of the same. Its ratings were lackluster, and it slipped below the radar of most critics. But when it aired as the follow-up to the Tuesday night episodes of American Idol halfway through its first season, its fan following began to grow exponentially week after week, and by the end of its first season, it was a breakout, Top 20 hit and would eventually win an Emmy for its writing.
Much of its success can be traced to the strength of its main character. Hugh Laurie plays Dr. Gregory House, the most brilliant medical mind in the field of diagnostics. He is able to solve even the most seemingly impossible medical riddles, but his bedside manner leaves much to be desired. With the help of his staff, whom House alternately mentors and ridicules—neurologist Dr. Eric Foreman, immunologist Dr. Allison Cameron and intensivist Dr. Robert Chase—his best friend and Guy Friday, oncologist Dr. James Wilson, and his supervisor and nemesis, administrator Dr. Lisa Cuddy, each week, House uses trial and error, a little investigation and the assumption that "everybody lies" to determine what strange malady is killing one of his patients.
House, M.D. is produced by Heel & Toe Films, Shore Z Productions and Bad Hat Harry Productions, in association with NBC Universal Television (in Seasons One through Three), Universal Media Studios (in Seasons Four through Seven) and Universal Television (in the eighth and final season). NBC Universal also holds the show's distribution rights for TV (through NBC Universal Television Distribution) and DVD (through Universal Studios Home Entertainment).
