Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005–2008) is an animated action children show that airs on Nickelodeon.
The Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads once lived in harmony with each other. Within each group there are people with magical powers to control their native element called "benders". These men and women require years of training to master their craft, but can wield tremendous power over the particular element. There is one person in the world who can control all four elements known as "The Avatar". The avatar functions as the embodiment of the world's spirit, and when they die their power is passed onto a new bender.
A hundred years ago the Fire Nation began a war against the other nations in an attempt to take over the world. At the time when the world most needed the Avatar, he mysteriously disappeared. At the time of the show, the Fire Nation has almost completed their conquest of the world and have exterminated all traces of the Air Nomads. The only nation that continues to hold out is the Earth Kingdom, and their ability to resist is waning. A few remnants of the Water Tribes are eking out a subsistence living when a brother (Sokka) and sister (Katara) discover Aang, a twelve-year-old boy who was apparently trapped in an iceberg.
Katara and Sokka soon discover that Aang is an Air Bender and the formerly missing Avatar. The siblings agree to escort Aang across the world on a journey to try and complete his training in the remaining three elements. Thus, their adventure begins.
